Mykonos – Paradise for the Gay Holiday maker
Shirley Valentine fell head over heels for this island, and it’s no wonder. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, plus one of the prettiest whitewash-and-cobble capitals you’ll come across, it’s just stunning.
Mykonos Town is the jewel in its crown. Behind the harbour, narrow streets – just wide enough for three-wheeled mopeds – are shops selling all sorts. Start at the harbour, pick one of the alleys that delve inwards, and set to work. Serious fashionistas should hunt down Soho-Soho. With Sarah Jessica Parker and Tom Cruise being papped clutching the store’s bags, it’s the island’s best-known clothes store.
Retail therapy aside, Little Venice is a must-see. Just inches above the sea, this part of Mykonos Town is probably the prettiest spot on the island. It’s laden with cafes, tavernas and bars that huddle as close to the water as possible, all eager to get the best view.
In the evening, pull up a chair at a cocktail bar and you’ll have the best seat in the house for Mykonos’ sunset. For those with an interest in antiquity, Mykonos Town makes a good base. The World Heritage-listed island of Delos is just a couple of kilometres offshore and boats run back and forth in the summer. It’s the mythical birthplace of the twin gods, Apollo and Artemis, and as such is an archaeological goldmine of temples and shrines.
As for nightlife, get used to bleary eyes – Mykonos Town burns the midnight oil like no other Greek island! And it’s not shy about it. So it’s not surprising it’s a popular stop for gay holidaymakers. For something a little more laid-back, though, head back to the snug dimly-lit bars of Little Venice.
